How usage limits work (Pro and Max)

Anthropic does not publish a fixed “messages per day” number. Usage depends on message length, attachments, conversation length, model, and features (Pro and Max articles; pricing FAQ).

5-hour session window

Session-based usage resets every five hours for Pro and Max. Max 5x gives five times Pro’s per-session allowance; Max 20x gives twenty times (Max plan article).

Weekly limit

Paid plans also have a weekly usage limit across all models. Your reset day and time are fixed per account—see Settings → Usage for the next reset (Pro and Max articles).

Other caps

Anthropic may apply additional weekly/monthly caps or model-specific limits “at our discretion” to manage capacity (Pro, Max, and pricing FAQ).

When you hit a limit

Pricing FAQ: wait for reset, upgrade plan, or on paid plans enable usage credits to continue at standard API rates. Check Settings → Usage before guessing.

Projects on Max

Projects organize chats with shared knowledge and instructions at claude.ai/projects. Anthropic’s pricing table lists Projects as “Up to 5” on Free and “Yes” on Pro and both Max tiers—so Max removes the Free five-project cap while keeping the same Projects workflow as Pro.

1. Create: Projects → + New Project → name/description (Claude does not read those labels as context per create and manage projects).
2. Knowledge: Upload docs/code to the project knowledge panel; instructions apply to all chats in the project.
3. Paid RAG: On paid plans, when project knowledge nears the context window, Claude enables RAG mode to expand capacity (same article).
4. Not Team sharing: Pricing shows project sharing/collaboration on consumer Pro/Max as No—org sharing is for Team/Enterprise plans.
5. Memory: Each project keeps separate memory from non-project chats; you can move chats between projects to manage what memory retains (projects article).

After upgrading to Max, open Settings → Usage once, then create one Project with a small knowledge file and a single focused chat— that validates both tier and Projects without burning a complex Research run on day one.
