Sign up → enable Generative AI → extension lightbulb or Editor → check Premium/Pro monthly prompts and Mac daily cap.
You want Grammarly generative AI: sign up at grammarly.com, turn on Generative AI under Feature customization or the browser extension dropdown, then use the green lightbulb or text selection in the Chrome/Edge extension, Grammarly Editor, or desktop apps. Plans and monthly prompt limits follow Grammarly Support: Introducing generative AI assistance, Browser extension user guide, How many generative AI prompts do I have?, Premium to Pro plan update.
The searchable job is Grammarly AI writing assistant: create account, enable generative AI, browser extension and Editor, Free/Premium/Pro prompt limits. Trust official Help—not third-party “unlimited rewrite” tables. Safari/Firefox extensions and Word add-ins are not on the supported generative AI product list (I can't use generative AI).
Grammarly generative AI vs ChatGPT billing
Pick Grammarly AI
You write in web forms, Gmail, Google Docs, or similar and want inline compose, rewrite, and reply plus grammar/tone underlines, with usage metered as monthly prompts.
Keep ChatGPT etc.
Long chat threads, plugins, team GPTs, or API pipelines—see our ChatGPT Team guide; whole-page summaries in the browser may fit Copilot in Edge.

Create a Grammarly account and confirm your plan
- 01Sign up on the site
Go to grammarly.com and create an account with email or supported social login; complete verification as prompted.
- 02Install a supported app
On-demand generative AI appears in Chrome/Edge extensions, Grammarly Editor, Grammarly for Windows/Mac, and listed mobile apps (Supported product offerings). Not Grammarly for Microsoft Office or Safari/Firefox extensions per the same list.
- 03Check your plan
Free accounts get monthly refills of generative AI prompts; when exhausted, UI shows days until the next refill (How many prompts). Help states Premium: 1000 prompts/month; Grammarly Pro (web): 2000 prompts/month plus team seats (Updating Premium to Pro). Pricing at grammarly.com/plans.
- 04Education / Business members
Admins can disable generative AI for the org—check Features or ask your admin (Business section).
Turn on Generative AI in account and extension
- 01Feature customization
After sign-in, open Feature customization and switch generative AI options on (Step 2). If toggles are grayed out, contact Grammarly Support per that article.
- 02Extension dropdown
Chrome/Edge: toolbar Grammarly icon → Generative AI in the dropdown—same intent as Windows/Mac Settings → Customization → Generative AI.
- 03Optional AI Chat
Extension settings include Activate AI Chat and manage generative AI settings (Managing settings). Mac AI Chat can start docs from a prompt (Introducing generative AI).
- 04Firewall / antivirus
If the lightbulb never appears, allow Grammarly hosts listed in Step 3 (auth.grammarly.com, data.grammarly.com, etc.).
First generative AI action in Chrome/Edge
- 01Confirm the extension
Grammarly icon in the toolbar and in the lower-right of text fields (Checking text).
- 02Click the green lightbulb
Next to the Grammarly icon, type a prompt or pick contextual suggestions (Using generative AI).
- 03Or select text to rewrite
Highlight text and use the pencil/lightbulb or sidebar; suggestions like “Improve it” count as one prompt (What is a prompt).
- 04Check remaining prompts
Upper-right count on the lightbulb UI; hover for days until monthly refill. Grammarly for Mac: Help notes a 1000 prompts/day cap with daily reset and no remaining-count UI yet (Mac note).
- 05First practical task
Rewrite a three-sentence email draft in Gmail, then accept grammar underlines—better than empty chat for judging Premium/Pro.
Generative AI in Grammarly Editor
- 01Open the Editor
From the extension toolbar or dashboard (Create a new document).
- 02Write with generative AI tab
Ask for an outline or paragraphs (On-demand generative AI, Editor user guide).
- 03Paragraph rewrites
Select a paragraph and use sidebar or paragraph-level rewrite flows linked from the same Help hub.
Minimum loop: sign up → enable Generative AI → lightbulb rewrite one email → read prompt count and refill date—four steps to decide if it complements ChatGPT.
Not the same bill as Copilot or ChatGPT
Compare Edge Copilot, ChatGPT Team, Perplexity Pro. Align copy on oakmeet—browser room, space code, no account. Limits: eight people, about an hour.
How many prompts on Grammarly Free?
How many prompts describes monthly refills and upgrade prompts for Free users but does not publish a specific Free monthly number—trust the lightbulb UI. Premium: 1000/month; Pro: 2000/month per Premium-to-Pro Help.
No green lightbulb?
Follow I can't use generative AI: supported product, toggles on, prompts remaining, network/security allowlist.
Word or Safari?
Same article lists Office, Word on Mac, Safari, and Firefox extensions as unsupported for that generative AI troubleshooting path—use Chrome/Edge or the Editor.
Premium vs Pro?
Updating Premium to Pro: mobile-store Premium stays at 1000/month; web Premium migrates to Pro (2000/month, team features) with billing unchanged per Help. See plans.
